Application of Microwave Technology in Chemical Engineering: From Esterification Innovation to Polymer Preparation - Mechanism, Process Enhancement, and Future Prospects
Main Article Content
Abstract
This review systematically summarizes the current development status, mechanism, application, and future challenges of microwave-assisted esterification reaction, a transformative technology. The traditional esterification process generally suffers from slow reaction kinetics, the use of corrosive catalysts, high energy consumption, and multiple by-products. Microwave technology has a unique volume heating mechanism, which directly and selectively excites polar reactants or catalysts through dipole polarization and ion conduction, achieving a qualitative leap in reaction efficiency. Microwave technology can significantly shorten the esterification reaction time, while significantly increasing the yield to over 90% and maintaining high product purity. Secondly, this technology can be applied in different fields. Thirdly, microwave technology can accelerate the polymerization process and achieve precise control of polymerization, which can be used for customized synthesis of functional polymer materials. There are also some problems and challenges with microwave technology, such as decreased energy transfer efficiency during amplification, design bottlenecks for dedicated reactors suitable for continuous flow, and a lack of reliable in-situ process monitoring technology. In summary, microwave-assisted esterification technology provides a powerful tool for the sustainable development. The future development needs to focus on in-depth exploration of basic mechanisms, development of intelligent reactor systems, integration with renewable energy, and establish standardized scaling up plans through industry university research cooperation to promote the technology from the laboratory to comprehensive industrialization.
